Energetic Bodies - Sciences and Aesthetics of Strength and Strain (Paperback): Thomas Moser, Wilma Scheschonk Energetic Bodies - Sciences and Aesthetics of Strength and Strain (Paperback)
Thomas Moser, Wilma Scheschonk
R1,301 Discovery Miles 13 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout the fin de siecle, "energy" was a buzzword that was used far beyond the boundaries of the sciences to negotiate the formative scope as well as limits of Western modernity. The human body was positioned at the center of the visualization of this enigmatic drive of all movement in discourses on labor and economics, physical culture, sport, art, and literature. It was through the body that this all-pervading and conditioning physical principle as well as its perceptual qualities were to be made tangible. This volume is dedicated to these "energetic bodies." The transdisciplinary individual contributions trace body scenarios of force and energy over the course of history from 1800 to the peak phase around 1900 and up to the present.

Objects and Organisms - Vivification - Reification - Transformation (Hardcover): Ella Beaucamp, Romana Kaske, Thomas Moser Objects and Organisms - Vivification - Reification - Transformation (Hardcover)

R1,539 Discovery Miles 15 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Advanced Concepts, Methods, and Applications in Semantic Computing (Hardcover): Olawande Daramola, Thomas Moser Advanced Concepts, Methods, and Applications in Semantic Computing (Hardcover)
Olawande Daramola, Thomas Moser
R6,728 Discovery Miles 67 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Semantic computing is critical for the development of semantic systems and applications that must utilize semantic analysis, semantic description, semantic interfaces, and semantic integration of data and services to deliver their objectives. Semantic computing has enormous capabilities to enhance the efficiency and throughput of systems that are based on key emerging concepts and technologies such as semantic web, internet of things, blockchain technology, and knowledge graphs. Thus, research that expounds advanced concepts, methods, technologies, and applications of semantic computing for solving challenges in real-world domains is vital. Advanced Concepts, Methods, and Applications in Semantic Computing is a scholarly reference book that provides a sound theoretical foundation for the application of semantic methods, concepts, and technologies for practical problem solving. It is designed as a comprehensive and reliable resource on how semantic-oriented approaches can be used to aid new emergent technologies and tackle real-world problems. Covering topics that include deep learning, machine learning, blockchain technology, and semantic web services, this book is ideal for professionals, academicians, researchers, and students working in the field of semantic computing in various disciplines, including but not limited to software engineering, systems engineering, knowledge engineering, electronic commerce, computer science, and information technology.

R4,498 Discovery Miles 44 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is based on the conference "EMU and the Outside World," held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), December 11, 1998. The conference was organized by the Swiss Institute for Business Cycle Research (KOF), which is supported jointly by the ETH and the Swiss Society for Business Cycle Research (SGK), an organization comprising representatives from private industry, the Swiss National Bank and public authorities. On the eve of the final stage of European Economic and Mone tary Union (EMU), Zurich seemed to be a particularly appropriate place for such a conference. On the one hand, given its location and economic and financial links with the euro area, Switzerland is one of the "outside coun tries" most affected by EMU. On the other hand, it was nowhere else than in Zurich where the vision of "a United States of Europe" was expressed for the first time by Winston Churchill in his speech on September 19, 1946. For many EMU is a step in that direction, whether welcome or not. Most of the papers appearing in this volume were presented at the con ference and have been revised and updated. Three contributions, chapter 11- 13, were commissioned specially for this publication. Besides the authors of the chapters, special thanks are due to Guido Boller, Robert McCauley, Umberto Schwarz, and Charles Wyplosz."

Learning Bodies (Hardcover): Thomas Moser, Theresa Schilhab Learning Bodies (Hardcover)
Thomas Moser, Theresa Schilhab; Edited by Malou Juelskjaer

Is the body a mere container of learning processes? Or can we, in a productive way, develop an approach to learning that includes learning as a bodily phenomenon? The authors all work with the development or refinement of theories of 'learning bodies, ' and in this anthology they present the state of the art to anybody with an interest in current scientific discussions about the interplay between body, movement and learning. A full understanding of learning in all its complexity requires that the body is taken into account - regardless of whether we are dealing with the neurological foundations of learning processes, skill acquisition, mental health and illness, aesthetics or the physical setting where the learning takes place. Body, movement and senses (in short: corporeality), provide the necessary experiences for change and development in relation to life-long learning. This anthology presents a range of theoretical approaches to learning; neuroscience, psychiatry, sociology, psychology, phenomenology and pedagogy. By presenting this range of approaches, the anthology raises a central question in the philosophy of science: the need for incorporation of different approaches to achieve further insights. The first section of the book, The Learning Body, concerns the learning process from a psychological, neuroscience and phenomenological point of view. In part two, The Encultured Body, gender and aesthetics will be analysed in relation to the body and the community of practice. The third section, The Educated Body, sheds light on various aspects of the body in educational contexts and different body-related conditions for learning. The anthology is of particular interest to researchers and students of education, development, and psychology, and to those interested in body and movement, both biomedical and the relation to social science and the humanities.
